Gainesville, Fla. – The Alachua County Library District’s 2020 Spring Music Series begins March 8 with Latin Grammy Award-winner José Valentino Ruiz and continues through May with classic, folk, and soul concerts. All performances are free and held in Meeting Room A at Headquarters Branch, 401 E. University Ave., Gainesville.
Ruiz will be accompanied by renowned percussionist Robert Acevedo Jr. at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. Ruiz is known for his passionate performances and fluid expression on the flute, saxophone, and bass. Valentino has produced music for numerous nationally televised documentaries, a feature film and 30-plus commercials, including Coca-Cola and ESPN. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Ruiz leads University of Florida’s Music Business and Entrepreneurship program. 
All community members are welcome to enjoy this afternoon of music. The Spring Music Series is generously supported by Dawn Realty, Sunshine State Credit Union, and Friends of the Library. Southern, Russian, and Swedish performers fill out the series lineup as follows:
  • Brian Luckett - Sunday, March 22, 2:30 p.m.
Classical guitarist Brian Luckett has performed solo and chamber music recitals throughout the United States and has been featured on NPR. Luckett teaches classical and flamenco guitar at Jacksonville University.
  • Sofia Talvik - Thursday, April 9, 6 p.m.
  • Sofia Talvik will perform her original songs, blending Nordic flavor and wistful American folk. Born off the Swedish coast, she is a veteran performer with eight full-length albums as well as numerous EPs, singles, and tours behind her.
  • Barynya - Sunday, April 26, 2:30 p.m.
  • Premier Russian folk ensemble Barynya presents traditional dancing, music, songs, and virtuoso performances on instruments including the balalaika Russian string instruments and garmoshka accordion. Husband-and-wife duo Mikhail Smirnov and Elina Karokhina will perform.
  • Mike Stone - Sunday, May 3, 2:30 p.m.
  • Our season finale features piano entertainer and America’s Got Talent finalist Mike Stone. Stone’s musical style is reminiscent of yesteryear, yet innovative. Stone combines Southern soul, gospel, jazz, and rhythm and blues.
