January Events

  • Cancer Support and Wellness Series
    Monday, January 8, 2018 to Monday, December 10, 2018
    Second Monday of each month, starting January 2018, 10:00 a.m. to noon.
    Free class series.

    Fun and educational classes will be offered to cancer patients, family members of the community to promote health and quality of life. Classes are free, but seating is limited. Snacks and refreshments will be provided on a first-come-first-served basis.

    “VA Research: InnoVAtion to Implementation” – October 05, 2018
    Research Day is free and open to the public and held in the auditorium at the Malcom Randall VAMC on October 05, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The event will showcase VA research in progress and how VA research efforts are impacting the treatment and prevention of disease and disability. The VA research speakers this year are Prodip Bose, MD, PhD; Janis J. Daly, PhD; Kenneth M. Heilman, MD; and I. David Weiner, MD. They will share medical advances on traumatic brain injury, stroke recovery, creativity and aging, and the regulation of body acid by the kidneys. The guest speaker will be Rachel Ramoni, DMD, ScD, Chief Research and Development Officer from the VA Office of Research and Development, Washington, DC. Dr. Ramoni will speak on “Undiagnosed Diseases in VA Health Care” and will address research and development questions by the attending investigators. After the research presentations there will be an Interactive Research Poster Exhibit from 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. highlighting 12 VA researchers and their studies. This is a wonderful opportunity to talk personally with researchers. Stay for all the presentations or come as your time permits.   • Annual 1890 Arts Crafts and Antiques Show in McIntosh, Florida

    Annual 1890 Arts Crafts and Antiques Show in McIntosh, Florida
    Admission is free to the 1890’s Festival to be held in Victorian McIntosh on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 8 am to 5 pm. Over 280 arts, crafts and antiques vendors from all over the country will participate, including a basket weaver, a spoon chime maker, a glassblower, leather tanner and origami artist, all demonstrating their crafts. The beautifully costumed McIntosh Scottish Clan will be here for the first time in 40 years.
    Beautiful old live oaks and charming Victorian homes provide shade and the backdrop for the all day free main stage entertainment. This year’s entertainment will feature an array of music from country to cajun, bluegrass, folk and gospel.
    The museum in the old downtown railroad depot will be open all day and will feature displays from days gone by in McIntosh.
    There will be a ring toss, sand art and face painting around the depot for children. Harmony School will be offering games, like ring and duck pond and there will be a geode digging booth on 4th Street.
    Van Ness Park is the central location for playground equipment, musical entertainment and chairs, benches and picnic tables. Food venders around the Civic Center will offer a variety of tasty options.
    McIntosh is on Highway 441, midway between Ocala and Gainesville. Venders and entertainment will be on the east side of town around the park. Parking is available in several privately run lots off of the highway with prices ranging from $5 to $10.00. Some of the churches on Highway 441 allow parking for donations. Handicap parking is on Avenue H and 4th Street.
    The 1890’s Festival is sponsored by the nonprofit, benevolent organization. The Friends of McIntosh. The organization is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the natural and historic beauty of McIntosh. Since its charter in 1973, the Friends organization has provided thousands of dollars in college scholarships to local young people in addition to support for the McIntosh area charter school. The school, church and local organization depends on the festival for fundraisers.
    This year special booths will be open for Operation Christmas Child, Mcintosh Christian Church, SPAC of Ocala, American Cancer Relay for Life and Flemington Baptist Church sign a Christmas card for a soldier. Non-profit booths will be located at 8th and F Street.

    Join us for a scary, good time as Sunny Cares Foundation, Inc. brings you the 30th annual Halloween carnival – Sunny’s Howl-A-Palooza Presented by Grins & Giggles Pediatric Dentistry!
    Each year, Sun Country Sports Center hosts an afternoon of Halloween fun, including free food and prizes, exclusive access to the facility, a variety of themed activities, silent auction, raffle and more. Kid-friendly costumes are welcomed and encouraged as we host costume contests for every age group. In keeping with Sun Country Sports values promoting children’s health and well-being, goody bags and prizes will be awarded in lieu of candy.

    The Sun Country Sports staff members and hundreds of local volunteers donate their time to put on the carnival. Proceeds from Howl-A-Palooza benefit the March of Dimes and the Phoebe Louise Dooley Foundation. In 2017, we were able to donate $24,000 and hope to give even more this year!
