Stephen Glenn Hartley's Obituary
Stephen Glenn Hartley passed from this life on September 20, 2025, at the age of 74 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on November 18, 1950, in Tampa, Florida, to Edwin Louis Hartley and Mary Louise (Doilney) Hartley, Stephen grew up on military bases in Florida, Kansas, Georgia, and Michigan – spending most of his childhood in Kissimmee, Florida. Stephen is survived by his two brothers, Robert and Phil Hartley, who he had close relationships with, sharing endless adventures and professional successes over the years.
Stephen was a man of infinite talents with friends everywhere he went. His iconic laugh and curious spirit are unforgettable. An ambitious cross-country bicycle trip in the mid-70’s landed him in the Pacific Northwest, in the town of Bend, Oregon. There, he met his lifelong love, Janet Mardelle “Mardi” Hartley, who changed the course of his life and created 46+ years of beautiful marriage. Together, they built their family in Kalispell, Montana, with the birth of their daughter, Megan Faith Hartley (Link) and identical twin sons, Kyle James Hartley and Jacob Glenn Hartley.
In 1989, Stephen and his family were presented with an opportunity to move back to Florida and build a residential construction business, Hartley Brothers Construction, with his brothers. This move changed the landscape of their lives – from long winters in NW Montana and a beautiful rural homestead overlooking Glacier National Park, to the joys of the Sunshine State. Weekends became scalloping and fishing in the Gulf, captaining his sailboat in the Atlantic, and quick hops to the Bahamas for epic vacations.
Steve’s greatest accomplishment was undoubtedly his family; Art and Megan Link and their two children, Ryan James and Ava Harper; Kyle and Aria Hartley and their son, Haven Grey; and Jacob and Jacqueline Hartley and their daughter, Lorina Jade. Steve will be remembered in the hearts and minds of his cherished family and friends he loved throughout his life. They will carry his stories, his famous recipes, and his loving, adventurous spirit forward as they honor him every day.
It would be remiss to not mention Steve’s love for animals and the many special dogs who happily spent their days with him, including his big girl, Zoe.
A private Celebration of Life will be held later this year.
