Maurice Edward Mayberry's Obituary
Maurice Edward Mayberry, 92, longtime resident of the Lake Winnott area of Hawthorne, Florida, died Friday, February 19, 2016, in the North Florida Regional Medical Center, Gainesville, following a brief illness.
Mr. Mayberry was born on July 15, 1923 in Ellenton, Florida to the late Benjamin and Frances Mayberry. A third generation Floridian, Mr. Mayberry was raised in Ocala, graduating from Ocala High School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Air Force. Following the war, he attended and graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He began a career with the F. B. I., serving as a special agent, in Indianapolis and then in New York City, until he returned to Gainesville in 1953. It was in that year that he founded the Career Resource Center at the University of Florida, and served as its director for 38 years. In 1957, he bought a piece of land on Lake Winnott, and began building the home that he owned and lived in at his passing. From 1971 until 1984, he lived with his wife in the Kingswood subdivision in Gainesville. He had a love of travel, along with his wife, travelling all over the world. He loved fishing and boating and was an avid photographer. Mr. Mayberry was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, in Gainesville.
He was preceded in death by his four year old son, Michael Ryan Mayberry in 1963.
Survivors include, his wife, Gloria Mayberry; one daughter, Marcia Mayberry Clark, of Winter Park; a son, Maurice Edward Mayberry, Jr., of Boca Raton; two step-daughters, Ann Shaw of Crowley, TX, and Twyla Kelso, of Olive Branch, MS; a step-son, Bob Lee Zimmerman, of San Antonio, FL, and by one sister, Frances Mayberry Hill, of Tampa.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at 11:00 A. M., in the Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church, 4000 NW 53rd Avenue, Gainesville. Interment will follow in Eliam Cemetery, Melrose. Donations may be made to the new building fund for the University of Florida, Career Resource Center, at www.crc.ufl.edu/breakingground.
