Marie’s kindness and generosity towards the ESL kids at Hopewell forever changed me. If there was a need, she found a way to fill it. She helped a Russian family buy a car. She got tickets for an African family to visit Kings Island one summer; they said it was the best day of their lives. As a teacher, she would “break” the rules by doing what the kids loved… like shutting the door and dancing without their shoes on. She opened her home to parties for the kids and dinners for ESL families. She spearheaded a program to help ESL kids learn English throughout the summer… and recruited us all to help… including Mark Westdendorf.
Marie befriended the family that owned our local Dunkin Donuts. She was known as a loving mom there. I laughingly remember her taking my order at the drive-thru window one day.
As her substitute, we would pretend there was a camera hidden where she could watch for good & bad behaviors. I would “talk to her” throughout the day. Sometimes her State Dept Lady (Cathy) would stop by for the same purpose.
It seemed that everything Marie did was out of love for others. I was so lucky to have known her. ❤️
