James Patrick Sucher's Obituary
Patrick Sucher, a world-renowned high diver, entertainer, and beloved community member, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of courage, artistry, and adventure. He was 76 years old.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, on April 26, 1949, Pat’s passion for life was evident from a young age. He attended Ohio State University, where he pursued extensive studies in Pre-Law and Philosophy and excelled as a collegiate athlete on the gymnastics, trampoline,
and springboard diving teams.
Pat’s life took a spectacular turn in 1972 when he was invited to perform in an international Aquacade show produced by Maxwell Associates in Athens, Greece. Over the next 16 years, he traveled the globe performing, managing, and producing high dive shows at
amusement parks and fairs. His breathtaking talent led him to compete in over 50 high dive competitions produced by ABC’s Wide World of Sports.
A pioneer and legend in his field, Pat set five world records for high diving, with his most daring dive from an astonishing 158 feet. He was crowned World High Dive Champion in 1977, featured in the Guinness Book of World Records for nine consecutive years,
and made history in 1976 as the first American to win the prestigious Acapulco Cliff Diving Championships—earning a perfect score of five straight tens.
Pat’s work in live field production gave him a rare, hands-on perspective of the entertainment industry that few ever attain. Beyond the spotlight, he remained grounded, generous, and deeply connected to his community. Later in life, he became a well-respected
Realtor, admired not only for his professionalism but also for his kindness and integrity. After his career ending with Maxwell Industry he went on to design and build a portal plexus glass pool and continued to create shows and travel around the world.
A true world traveler and storyteller, Pat’s life was marked by boundless curiosity, remarkable resilience, and an unshakable sense of adventure. Whether standing on the edge of a cliff or helping someone find their dream home, he gave his all.
He is survived by his love of 34-years, Marilyn Powell, son Justin Sucher, daughter Kelly Sucher, brother Dan Sucher, and many other close friends and family. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him and the countless lives he inspired.
