Hershal "Herb" Meizius' Obituary
Hershal “Herb” Meizius passed away peacefully at 9:24pm on September 3rd, 2020, at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife Rose, sons Ian and Aaron, daughter Rachael, grandchildren Abigail, Russell, Lily and Finnley, and sister Nadine.
Born in Chicago in 1946, Herb was the son of Abe and Yetta. They later moved to Miami, where Herb lived until graduating in 1964. He then obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University before joining the Army in 1965. After serving as an enlisted soldier, Herb went to OCS and became an officer in the Army Reserve. He returned to Miami and graduated from the Metropolitan Police Institute in 1969. Herb began his law enforcement career in the Metro-Dade Police Department. In 1972 he moved to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office in Gainesville, FL, where he served as a Lieutenant Deputy until retiring in 1987.
Herb loved golf, cars, guns, the Miami Dolphins, Wild Turkey and, above all, his family. He was tough, wise, funny and stubborn. He had a huge impact on so many people, and he will be greatly missed.
A service will be held Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at WILLIAMS-THOMAS DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 404 North main street. A service with military honors will be held Monday, September 14, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL
