1. Zest for life.
More than a decade ago, Guanghua and his family immigrated to US. To me, the main purpose is for his son’s education. Second is to take care his health. At that time, he has serious health issues and was not properly treated in China. At that time, I worked in the college of medicine and arranged the diagnosis and subsequent open-heart surgery. After the surgery, The surgeon told me that he has never seen a patient with such a strong desire for life and that is truly a miracle. Guanhua’s right artery has 100% blockage. Normally at this situation, the right heart’s mussel will die due to lack of blood and oxygen. But, Guanhua’s right heart grow a dense net of micro blood vessels that supplied the mussel of the right heart with oxygen. That kept the right side of heart mussel alive ad made the surgery a successful case. This surgery, in my mind has given him more than a decade to watch his son grow and accompanied his son through graduation of high school, college and master degree.
2. A thinker and a poet.
He told me in his company, the board of directors will rotate act as the CEO. As the CEO, at the end of the year, The CEO will summarize the accomplishment of the year and lay out the vision for the coming year. I was honored to read one of his year end report. I do not know other companies year end reports, I was invited to several of those year end events in Jiangsu and Shanghai. And I can tell you, none of them are remotely resembles Guanhua’s year end report. His report is truly a thinker and visionary and no one will think that is a CEO’s year end report.
3. Honorable person.
He is an honorable person and a noble person. Honesty and contractual spirit are in his blood.
One day we were having tea and chatting. He told me that he will no longer take the salary. I asked him why, is the company asking him not to? I said, at his level, most company will have a sick leave package. He said, no, that was entirely his own decision. He is recovering from his health and he felt that he did not do the work to deserve a 7 figure salary.
4. Visionary
There was a time I was buying houses. And Guanhua and I talked about the real estate business. I was using my own money to buy houses and he said, why would you do that? Use bank’s money to buy the house. But, everyone is different, just like he said, some people use time to make money, and some people use money to buy time. I guess that I am the first type, and he is the second type. Many occasions, he expressed that he worked hard when he was young. And now, he is using money to buy time.
5. A good father.
We had many conversations, a lot of them was regarding his son. In my eyes, he is a kind and tolerate father. Many times, he told me that he worked hard, so his son does not have to choose a job that he does not like. His son can choose a job he likes regardless how much the job pays.
His hard work will give his son the freedom of choice when he coming to the age of choosing a career.
