Fred was preceded in death by his son, Fred Scott Guggenheimer, III, his step-father, Col. Robert A. Evans, and his parents.
Fred was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on May 28, 1938. After marrying Julia, they lived in Ocala, FL where they owned the Shangri-la Motel. They then moved to Gainesville, FL in the early 1960’s where Fred built and managed the Frederick Garden Apartments up until 1976, and then began to sell real estate for a short time. He then built and managed Scott Ace Hardware and the Washpot Laundromat before retiring to enjoy life. Fred and Julia traveled extensively throughout the United States in their R.V.
Fred was passionate about life and the outdoors. He loved to fish (he was a founding member and past president of the Gainesville Offshore Fishing Club), protect the environment (he was a member of the Florida Conservation Association and helped build the artificial reef off of Cedar Key). He also loved to go Jeeping in the western desserts and Rocky Mountains, hike in National Parks, and propagate his wild bluebirds. Fred loved his community and was a member of the Gainesville Kiwanis Club and the First United Methodist Church.
Fred also loved listening to music as he drove his tractor, digging up rocks with his backhoe, fish fries with his family, tinkering in the barn with his collection of beloved tools, and supporting Gator athletics. He absolutely loved being a “Papa” and “Grandpa” and frequently entertained the family with stories of long ago.
A simple graveside service will be held at 10:00am Wednesday, August 29th, 2018 at Forest Meadows Central, 4100 NW 39th Avenue, conducted by Mr. Calvin Manker. The service will be followed by a reception at Fred and Julia’s home in Marlboro Farms in Newberry, FL serving his very favorite food, Sonny’s BBQ!
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of Fred’s favorite community facilities, Al’z Place. Al’z supported his wife, Julia, for years with her advanced Alzheimer’s Disease. Please contact Nancy Lewis at 352-265-9200 for donation information.
