Frances Benson Head's Obituary
Frances Benson Head, 95, was born on September 6, 1921, in Montgomery, AL. Mrs. Head, a retired teacher and journalist, spent her early years in Atlanta, GA. She attended Duke University and the University of Wisconsin, where she graduated in Journalism, Speech and English with a teaching certificate. Mrs. Head taught for nine years in two senior high schools in Atlanta - Girls High School and Henry Grady High School. She taught English, Latin and Speech.
In 1951 she married Robert F. Head, Jr., and moved to Gainesville in 1952. Serving in many areas of work of the women of the First Presbyterian Church, she was awarded an honorary life membership. Mrs. Head was one of the founders of Oak Hall School. For three years she was society and feature writer for the Gainesville Independent weekly newspaper. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and a former member of the Gainesville Pen Women and the D.A.R.
A resident of North Florida Retirement Village since 1999, Mrs. Head held sing-a-longs and played the piano for Sunday evening Vespers. In their late 80's, Mrs. Head and good friend Margaret Rosenberger compiled and published two volumes of jokes, "Humor of a Lifetime".
Survivors include her daughter France Addington-Lee (Marc Lee) of Denver, CO and son Robert F. Head, III (Connie) of Commerce, GA.
Services will be held Wednesday, January 11, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 106 SW 3rd Street. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or Haven Hospice.
