Elizabeth Gomez James' Obituary
Elizabeth Gomez James, age 94 of Gainesville passed away Sunday, January 17, 2016. She was born September 16, 1921 in Key West, Florida to Rogelio Gomez and Evita Garcia-Gomez. She was a sixth generation Conch of Key West. She retired from the Monroe County Public Schools after more than 30 years of service as a teacher and administrator.
Elizabeth Moved to Gainesville in 2003 to be close to her granddaughter, Elizabeth and great grandchildren, Ashleigh and Reece. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the Red Hat Society.
Her husband, the former Key West Chief of Police, Winston Louis James, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children: Eliott D. James and daughter-in-law, Joanne; Manuel W. James and daughter-in-law, Modish; Annette James Scafuti and son-in-law, Joseph; granddaughters: Beth James; Jennifer James; Suzette O'Donnell and grandson-in-law, Patrick; Elizabeth Vodre' and grandson-in-law, Jeffrey; great-grandchildren: Ashleigh and Reece; Hunter and Brendan; and Joshua and Caleb; special cousins Tony Ann Lewis and husband Andy, and Gail Tynes, and numerous other cousins and close friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Jeff McGowan as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 10900 SW 24th Ave. Gainesville, FL 32607 or Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd. Gainesville, FL 32606.
