Jack started me on my career in entomology. That wasn't what I had planned, but he identified me as someone who might be a good technician and hired me when I was depressed and badly in need of a job. I was good (!) so he encouraged me to get my PhD. I did!
Jack was always supportive and had a huge impact on my career development. He stimulated me to study and take on projects. He gave me enough freedom and support to develop science and professionally.
Thank God he didn't look at my transcripts to realize how bad I scored in
genetics, the field I would be working in. Working under Jack was an OJT experience that served me for decades.
Farewell Jack. Comfort to Becky, David and Amy. I hope you can find many good memories to cherish.
