Dr. Herbert E. Ward's Obituary
Dr. Herbert E. Ward, of Gainesville, FL died on December 28, 2022, at the age of 68. He was born June 8, 1954, in Conway, SC to Herbert Eugene Ward and Mary Best Ward. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Francis Marion University, he earned an MS in pharmacology from the University of South Carolina and an MD from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed residencies in both Internal Medicine and Behavior Medicine and Psychiatry at West Virginia University Medical Center. At WVU, he was assistant professor of Behavior Medicine and Psychiatry and director of several research and medical programs. In 1995, he received a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Florida College of Medicine, where he was Kaine Professor of Psychiatry. During his long career at the University of Florida, he held many administrative appointments, including Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, Division Chief of Adult Psychiatry, and Medical Director of Adult Outpatient Services. He was very active in medical research, receiving numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Institutes of Mental Health. At both West Virginia University and the University of Florida, he was recognized by many awards for exemplary teaching and mentorship. At the time of his death, he was an Attending Psychiatrist at North Florida Regional Psychiatry LLC in Gainesville, FL.
He is survived by his wife, Marian Ward, of Gainesville; niece Anna Ogburn of Blythewood, SC; niece Sinclair Ogburn Pluss, her husband Kristoffer and daughter Anna Maria of Blythewood, SC; and sister-in-law, Theresa Coletti of Washington, DC.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 3pm on February 8, 2023, at the University of Florida Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases (3009 SW Williston Rd., Gainesville, FL).
