Dr. Elroy "Roy" Joseph Bolduc, Jr.'s Obituary
Dr. Elroy “Roy” Joseph Bolduc, Jr. 91, of Gainesville FL passed away on December 9, 2022, after a brief illness. He was born in Norwich, Connecticut on June 16, 1931, to Elroy and Fleurdina Bolduc.
Roy was raised in Norwich and attended Norwich Free Academy prior to pursuing higher education at McGill University in Montreal (Quebec). He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War where he served as a Staff Sargent and air traffic controller before returning to stateside to work as an air traffic controller at LaGuardia Airport in New York City. While in the Air Force he met the love of his life Noralee Hastings, they were married in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, in September 1957. In order to continue his education, Roy enrolled at the University of Connecticut, where he graduated with a degree in physics and then returned to his alma mater, Norwich Free Academy, to teach high school physics. A fervent desire to further his education led him to the University of Tennessee where he received both a Master's Degree in Mathematics and an Ed.D in Mathematics Education. In the late 1960’s Roy joined the faculty at the University of Florida as a Professor of Mathematics Education and served as Chair of the University’s College of Education’s Department of Secondary Education prior to retiring in the mid 1990’s. He was granted Professor Emeritus status upon his retirement. Roy was also a Past President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Roy’s love of teaching and technology took both he and Noralee all over the world. Some favorite places include spending over 30 summers in Switzerland, as well as various other locations in England, Wales, Germany, Turkey, India, Saudi Arabi, Malaysia and many more. He was always quick to share tales from these adventures with his family and friends and did so with great enthusiasm and joy. Roy cherished travelling the world and immersing himself in the local cultures and traditions at every chance. He was fearless in his exploration of new foods and recipes that might feed his love of cooking which, in turn, would always result in internationally diverse and delicious meals he would prepare for family and friends.
Roy is survived by his wife of 65 years, Noralee Bolduc, daughter Charron Umlauf and her husband John, sons E.J. Bolduc III and his wife Janet, and Thomy Bolduc and his wife Jenese, four granddaughters, Lindsey (David) Stahl, Courtney (Chris) Beatty, Jenna Withington, Ele (Josh) Diblin, and six great grandchildren, Madison, Brooks, Jacob, Blake, Kyler, and Carter. He is also survived by his sister Eunice (Mickey), brother Bob (Mel), and cousin Jim (Annie).
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 22, 2022, at 10:00 am, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 10900 SW 24th Avenue, Gainesville, FL with military honors.
