Charles & Onyx Shaffer's Obituary
Dr. Charles Vernon Shaffer, 91 died peacefully on January 17, 2014 at E.T. York’s Haven Hospice. He was born in Melbourne, FL to parents Charles G. and Jessie A. Shaffer. In 1944 he earned a UF BEE degree in Electrical Engineering (honors), married Onyx Grubbs in Gainesville, FL & became an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve who served in the Pacific. Upon return in 1946, he joined as a faculty member of the UF EE Dep’t; during his 42 years of service he earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Dr. Shaffer was one of eight UF Alumni to be honored at the UF 2001 fall Commencement, as “A Tribute to Veterans.” The final paragraph in his printed tribute follows:
“During his time at UF, Dr. Shaffer has earned several teaching awards & contributed research findings to professional journals. Also, during summers he worked in national research and development laboratories including NASA Ames, Moffett Field, CA where he earned patents on circuit design for space probes. Other research work included efforts for Bell Labs, U.S. Army Missile Command, and IBM. A member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Shaffer has been listed in American Men and Women of Science, and Who’s Who in Computer Education and Research.”
He is survived by his brothers, LTC Don W Shaffer Sr, and Dr Robert L
Shaffer, PHD; son, Charles Lewis Shaffer; daughter, Dr Joy Diane Sutton; grandson, Gregory S Jones II and granddaughter Lily Onyx Jones. His wife Onyx and daughter Mary Onyx Jones preceded him in death.
Graveside Service and inurnment will be held in Florida National Cemetery in
Bushnell, FL on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 1:00PM.
