Bill Graham
Dr. Shaffer was one of my favorite professors during my time at UF in the late 70's. I took an undergraduate and two graduate courses taught by him. He was very well organized, very knowledgeable, and always approachable and friendly. In his classroom, he always encouraged his students to ask questions and never made us feel intimidated or embarrassed. He was what we students called "a good dude". Several years after I graduated and was contemplating moving back to Gainesville and accepting a job with a small local engineering consulting firm, I called Dr. Shaffer for some professional advice. I doubt he remembered me from his thousands of students, but he took the time to council me into making a decision that turned out to be one of the best that I've ever made. I remember him fondly and would like to offer my condolences to the Shaffer family.
