Candy was my stepsister. My most vivid early memory of her was her wedding, mostly through photographs my father took. At the time, she seemed much older, wiser, and more experienced than I was. I thought she was beautiful and interesting, but we had little in common and, over the years, lost touch.
About fifteen years ago, we reconnected. I visited her once in Hawthorne, but the real foundation of our relationship was letters and cards. Candy was an exceptional pen pal. Her correspondence ranged from wonderfully crafty cutouts and drawings to heartfelt letters updating me on her life. Through those cards and letters, we came to know one another in a way that was significant for me. I looked forward to hearing from her and was regularly awed by the creativity and effort she put into her correspondence. She brought kindness, humor and warmth with a free spirit untethered to the material world.
I miss her very much.
