Bhaskar Bandyopadhyay's Obituary
Bhaskar Bandyopadhyay, 84, passed away peacefully on October 1. Born in Kolkata, India, Dr. Bandyopadhyay emigrated to the United States in 1964 to pursue his doctorate in Chemical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He went on to a 32-year career as a research and development process engineer and manager in the phosphate industry, initially in Syracuse, New York, and then in North Florida, moving with his family to Gainesville in 1980. After his retirement from industry, Dr. Bandyopadhyay taught chemistry at Santa Fe College. He thoroughly enjoyed interacting with students and was delighted when he ran into them while out and about in the community. A lifelong tennis aficionado who never failed to watch the Grand Slam tournaments on TV, he always cherished the memories of his trips to Wimbledon and the U.S. Open with his family. And 44 years in Gainesville was more than enough to turn him into an avid Gator Football fan, loudly cheering the team on - in good years and bad - whether from his seat in the stadium or the one in his living room.
Predeceased by his parents, two brothers, and his beloved cat Lucy, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rosalie, his daughters Reba (Nick Raines) & Sheila, granddaughter Miranda, sister Sipra, his sister- and brother- in-law Maureen & Barry, numerous nieces and nephews in the U.S. and India, and three grandcats.
A traditional funeral service took place in Kolkata and a Memorial will be held in Gainesville in November. The family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider making a donation in his honor to either the Santa Fe College Foundation “Arts and Sciences Scholarship” or the Humane Society of North Central Florida.
The family thanks the kindhearted and skillful staff of the Village at Gainesville for their compassion and care for Bhaskar over the past 18 months.
