Betty Virginia Beaver Godwin Scott's Obituary
Betty Virginia Beaver Godwin Scott, 88, passed away November 8, 2015, in Gainesville, FL. She was born April 2, 1927 in Jesup, Georgia, to Luther T. and Annie G. Bennett Beaver. Betty moved to Gainesville in 1987 from Mount Prospect, Illinois. She served as a Girl Scout Leader in Orange, CA. In Arlington Heights, IL, she worked at John Hersey High School. She served as Administrative Assistant at The Volunteer Center in Gainesville for several years making a real impact helping to link volunteers with community programs. She and her husband, through the Telephone Pioneers, helped make tremendous numbers of "Hug a Bears" that were given to children in need. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf as well as dancing, and traveling -- especially to Hawaii.
She is preceded in death by her first husband of 37 years, David Paul Godwin; second husband, Frederick O. “Scotty” Scott, for almost 27 years, who passed away October 31, 2015; and sisters, Gladys Owens, Ruby Elliott, Bernola Paschal, and Carrie Ingram. She is survived by her brother, Thomas Beaver of Gainesville; two daughters, Terry Beauchamp of Gainesville and Paula Mekdeci of Virginia Beach, VA; step children, Sandra Payne of Sacramento, CA, Frederick “Rick” Scott, Jr. of Colorado, Bruce Scott of Fountain Valley, CA, Leslie Handelman of Morris, CT, and Robin Cunningham of Gainesville; grandchildren, Toby Beauchamp, Lauren Marlowe, Benjamin Coppel, and Emily Coppel; and great-grandchildren; Emma Jane and Logan Marlowe.
The family will receive friends Monday, November 16, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a funeral service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 NW 143rd Street, with Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Burial will follow Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at The Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell, FL 33513. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Betty’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association to help continue the fight against Alzheimer’s and to help find a cure.
