Barbara Hinda Dubin Herbstman's Obituary
Barbara Hinda Dubin Herbstman passed away on December 12 at the age of 85. A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend, Barbara spent a life giving to her community, her family, and those she loved. Born to Joshua and Irene Dubin on April 7, 1938, Barbara grew up in the Bronx, NY. She was a graduate of Syracuse University, Columbia University, and the University of Illinois where she obtained her PhD in Philosophy. She spent her entire professional career as a teacher, from teaching first-grade level students all the way through graduate-level coursework.
In 1975, she married the love of her life, Dr. Joe Herbstman. After having two children, they settled down in Gainesville in 1979 to raise their young family. Barbara was active in the local Jewish community. She also gave her time and efforts to various environmental and social causes that she felt passionately about. She very much believed in tikkun olam…the Jewish concept which instructs us to repair the world. And above all, Barbara was a devoted friend, wife and mom.
Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband Joe, and her beloved daughter Deborah. She is survived by her son Joshua. In lieu of flowers, Joshua asks that a donation be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
