Dr. Anthony Nowels' Obituary
In loving memory of Anthony Nowels, who passed away on August 15, 2024. He was the devoted husband of Kathleen and loving father of Michael and Matthew, father-in-law of Patti and Felicia, and grandfather to Patrick, John Christian, Lucas, Antonia, Matthew and Jake. Tony, lovingly called “Pops” or “Commander” will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on June 13, 1942, in Irvington, New Jersey to William and Florence Sawicki Nowels, Tony served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Public Health Service, and was a psychiatrist who began his long career in medicine with the University of Miami, and later oversaw the Grant Center Hospital for Children and Adolescence, ending his career as medical director of a Miami area hospital.
Our Pops lived his life so generously to all, inviting all to his table to share life, stories, food and good cheer. He was a giving man who worked tirelessly to ensure that his family had everything they needed. He approached building his family, life and career with the same admirable virtues: compassion, love and understanding.
His larger-than-life presence could be felt in his kind blue eyes as well as his hearty sideline cheering at all his boys’ sports games. He was always there for us, guiding us with his thoughtful and practical approach to life. He taught us the importance of family, hard work and equally enjoying life – through travel, through his devoted marriage to the love of his life, Kathy, through friendship, through gardening and cooking…and his chocolate cakes!
Our Pops was a true role model who we will always look up to. We all strive to make our homes as inviting and welcoming as he made his.
The family will host a gathering on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 10:00 A. M. to 12:00 P. M. in the Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Westarea, 823 NW 143rd Street, Newberry, followed by a graveside service in Newberry Cemetery.
Pops, you are now at peace, but you will live on forever in our hearts. We love you so much. Rest in peace.
