In 1983 when my husband, Dr. Joseph J. Tepas, III, completed his Navy service and was seeking an opportunity, he contacted his mentor, Dr. Alec Haller at Johns Hopkins, who contacted one of his previous Fellow, Dr. James L. Talbert, who was seeking a pediatric surgeon to grow the new surgical practice and residency at UF in Jacksonville. When Joe accepted the invitation to visit and consider the position, it began a life long friendship.
Even before we moved to Florida from Virginia, Slice and I became great friends. Her energy, enthusiasm and encouragement helped me to grow as a partner and supporter of my husband’s career. Her dedication to the Dept. of Surgery and The Ronald MacDonald House inspired my own years of involvement in both endeavors in Jacksonville.
Alice was a friend, a mentor, a co-conspirator and a dynamo. Our long phone chats and all too infrequent visits became cherished memories as our husbands’ passings took us in different directions.
My children loved her as a third grandmother. I cherished her as a dear friend.
