Wilma Jean Mitchell Galanos' Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Wilma Jean Mitchell Galanos, a beloved wife, sister, aunt, great-aunt, and friend, who left this world peacefully on the first day of Spring, March 21, 2025. She was 75 years old. For 55 beautiful years, she was the cherished partner of her devoted husband, Louis, sharing a bond that exemplified love, laughter, and unwavering support. Early on Louis realized what a lucky schmuck he was to have a lady like Wilma in his life.
Born on Jan 20, 1950, in Daytona Beach, Florida to William and Henrietta Mitchell, Wilma brought warmth and light into the lives of all who knew her especially to the students she taught at Williston High School for almost 30 years. She possessed a kind and selfless heart, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her infectious smile could brighten even the darkest of days, and her resilience during the last years of her illness was an inspiration to everyone around her.
She is survived by her husband Louis (that same lucky schmuck), her sister Mary Etta Ballou and her husband Dr. Bernard Ballou. Included in the family are nephew Michael Ballou, niece Amy Ballou Grunder and her husband Tristan along
with their wonderful children Landon and Lacey. Included in that extended family are our very good friends Patricia and Gary Grunder. It was oft said over the years that the way Wilma and Gary acted around each other that he could have been her brother from another mother.
A graduate of the University of Florida (Go Gators) Wilma enjoyed watching Gator basketball, going to the beach, sailing on Lake Santa Fe and the Gulf of Mexico (it was called Mexico back then) as well as gardening. Being of Scottish origin (her husband was also pretty cheap) she enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—whether it was going for bike rides, walks, family gatherings, or sharing quiet moments with her husband. Her love and care were felt in everything she did, making the world a kinder, more beautiful place.
