Willie Mae Fisher Hughes' Obituary
Willie Mae Fisher Hughes beloved Family Member, Friend, Cosmetologist, Gardener, Seamstress, Community Servant, and Chef departed this life on Monday, February 17, 2025. She was born in the Jonesville Community on December 25, 1930, and spent much of her life in Jonesville or in Dade County. She graduated from Lincoln High School, and Power’s Cosmetology and Beauty Academy.
She spent much of her younger years nurturing her children and grandchildren, instilling in them the same drive she encompassed for a better life, a strong community, and a need to help everyone she could. She had a green thumb – often throwing seeds into her yard later to harvest her crop for the many meals she cooked for her family and friends. She always had a full meal prepared for her ‘company’, but they would always have to take a walk in her yard to see what she had growing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, T Hughes; her son, Gary; her granddaughter, Njeria; her parents, Emit and Edna Fisher and her siblings, George, Edith, Ollie, Carrie, Willie Lee, Jimmy.
She is survived by her daughter Edith and her husband, Charlie; her daughter Elaine; and her son Gary’s wife, Karen. Her grandchildren - Nkenge and her children (DJ and DeSean), Njeria’s daughter Arlaysia; D’Andre and his wife Nicole and their child (Elijah ), Gary Jr. and his wife Jennifer and their children (McKenzie and Milani); her great-great granddaughter Sariah; her brother and short term caregiver, Ulysess; her sister, Ora; nieces, nephews, cousins; Dwaine and Mary, Vernell and Bill, Teresa, Barbara, Ralph, Lou, Shirley and other supporters and friends.
Graveside service will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025. at 10:00 a.m. at Pleasant Plain United Methodist Cemetery 1910 N.W. 166 Street Newberry, Fl. with Pastor Harvey Long as officiant.
When the flu epidemic slows, and the world settles and we can meet as a group again, a more formal memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Hughes Family, 13602 NW 13th Ave, Gainesville 32606.
