The loss of a good friend is more than difficult and Bill was a good friend.
I met Bill in 2005 when my wife and I moved into The Courtyards in Gainesville. Our initial connection was insurance companies as I had worked for Cigna and, at that time, I was working for AIG. Bill had put many years into Nationwide. That was the start of our friendship. However, it was sports that seriously brought us together. We jointly went to Gator sport events for many years and I enjoyed the comradeship. In more recent years, I went to Bill's apartment at The Village Retirement Community and discussed our many life experiences with the common denominators of growing up in New York in primarily Italian neighborhoods. Seeing each other brought us back to a multitude of memories that we shared. I always looked forward to spending time with Bill.
An experience that occurred in 2008 with Bill is memorable as we were waiting in line together to enter the O Connell Center to see a sporting event. As it was a cold night, I had brought a jacket with me. When I started to put the jacket on, Bill told me to take it off immediately. In response to my why do that Bill told me that the financial market had just taken a serious hit and that AIG was considered to be primarily responsible. As a result of that situation, many people were witness to the shrinking of their personal finances. My jacket had a large AIG patch on it and Bill said that someone who had lost a lot in the market, and saw that patch on my jacket might do me some harm. I immediately turned my jacket inside out and thanked Bill for sharing that information with me. Bill than asked me what AIG stood for and I responded that it was American International Group. No, he immediately said. It stood for Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed! Bill always seemed to know such things.

My mom, Enea Hyden, was Mr. Bill's secretary at Nationwide for many years until she retired. We visited Mr. Bill in The Village at his home a few years before my mom passed in 2021. We all had a lovely visit on the screened porch. I saw a bluebird that day and it humored both of them that I was going so crazy with excitement because I had seen very few in my life. When my mom got lymphoma in 2014, I worked for Hospice. I was sad and worried and asked God to give me a sign she would be OK. I was at my desk and a blue bird landed on the window of my office. I had never seen one before. I felt such peace. A nurse told me bluebirds bring signs of peace and goid health. My mom died 7 years later at the age of 95 unrelated to lymphoma. That generation is filled with tough ones that made it through wars and the depression. I was visited by a bluebird in the mountains one week after my mom passed. Pure peace it brought me. So I think back on their laughter at my reaction to the bluebird I saw at Mr. Bill's and I find peace that mom and Mr. Bill can share some smiles in heaven. He was a wonderful man and my mom said he was the greatest boss she ever had! Peace be with you all. Diana Hyden Williams

To the family of Bill Gobus,
You know it was a blessing to know Bill. As your hearts ache from the separation, may I say a few words?
Bill was a true gentleman and friend. I always looked forward to visiting with him. From his stories of his travels, adventures, to Gator games, plays and tremendous sense of humor; we never had a dull moment during our visits. Bill knew everybody. It was an honor to be introduced to his friends. Always a humorous quip and a smile. I am honored Bill, to have shared your company. Blessings my friend and prayers for your family. We all deeply miss your presence with us.
