Tommy "Poppy" Cowart's Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Tommy Cowart, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who departed this life on July 26, 2026, at the age of 70. Tommy leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, and countless cherished memories that will forever live in the hearts of those who knew him.
Born and raised in Starke, Florida, Tommy was proud of his hometown and the values it instilled in him. He attended Bradford High School before continuing his education and later earning his HVAC certification. His strong work ethic and dedication led him to a long and fulfilling career with Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU), where he faithfully served in the Gas Department until his retirement.
For 50 wonderful years, Tommy shared a beautiful marriage with the love of his life, Brenda Cowart. Together they built a home centered on faith, love, laughter, and family. Their greatest accomplishment was raising four wonderful children: Stacy Cowart (Cami), Amber Curchy; Angelia "Angie" Cowart; and Ashley Johnston (Brad). Tommy also leaves behind his sisters; Louise Alldredge, Gail Mansfield, and Elaine Wynn. He was preceded in death by his brother; James Cowart, sister; Patricia “Pat” Woolard.
Although Tommy was a devoted husband and father, nothing brought him more joy than being "Poppy" to his seven beloved grandchildren, Samantha Cowart, Madison Curchy, Calyssa “Callie” Cowart, Quinn Curchy, Cameron St. Clair, Monroe Curchy and Kenneth “Chase” Carlisle. They were the light of his life. Whether it was softball, basketball, volleyball, or any other activity they loved, he was always there in the stands or on the sidelines, cheering them on with pride. He rarely missed a game, practice, or special event, and his unwavering support will be remembered by his family forever.
Tommy was an avid Florida Gators fan and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on the Orange and Blue. Whether watching a game from home or talking Gator sports with family and friends, his enthusiasm was contagious and brought people together.
He also had a lifelong love for golf. Some of his happiest memories were made on the golf course with his son, Stacy. No matter where the family traveled, one tradition remained the same—they always found time to play the local golf course together, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Throughout the High Springs community, Tommy was affectionately known as "Pops." Alongside his family, he became a familiar and welcoming face at Outdoor Life for Guys and Gals, where he enjoyed visiting with customers, making friends, and helping anyone who walked through the door. He was a steady presence in High Springs, known for his kindness, warm smile, and genuine interest in others. To so many, "Pops" wasn't just a nickname—it was a reflection of the caring, dependable man they had come to know and love.
Those who knew Tommy will remember his quiet strength, unwavering work ethic, generous heart, and deep love for his family. He taught by example what it meant to be dependable, humble, and selfless. His greatest accomplishments were never measured by career achievements, but by the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched through his kindness, encouragement, and steadfast presence.
Though our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort in knowing that the love he gave so freely will continue through the family he adored. His legacy will live on in every game watched from the stands, every round of golf played, every Florida Gators victory celebrated, every family gathering, and every story shared about the man everyone proudly called Poppy and Pops.
Tommy Cowart will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
A graveside service to honor the life of Tommy will be held Monday, August 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Fort White Cemetery 252 S.W. Horton Drive Fort White, Florida 32038 with Pastor Jimmy Toney officiating.
