Ms. Saturia Osorio passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on September 2nd, in Gainesville, FL. She was a young 92.
She is survived by her children, Alfonso Ricardo Murillo, Sandra Murillo Sareyko, and Adriana Patricia Gutenmann, her grand-children, John Matthew Weber, Sandra Catalina Murillo, Michael Sebastian Weber, Alexander William Gutenmann, Luis Cardona, and Violet Sofia Murillo, her daughter-in-law Marcela Tavera, her son-in-law Thomas Sareyko, and her siblings, Susana Osorio de Gomez, Cecilia Osorio, and Luciano Osorio. She is predeceased by her parents, Luciano Osorio and Alejandrina Rivera, and her sisters Lucila Osorio, Maria Antonia Osorio de Moya, and Graciela Osorio.
Born in Bogota in 1928, Ms. Osorio was an accountant by trade, spending most of her years as a homemaker. She enjoyed painting on porcelain, knitting, and learning new craft techniques. She was a wonderful chef and could prepare the most exquisite meals, both for everyday meals and for entertaining large groups. She loved music, travel, new design trends, get-togethers, and events of all sizes.
Her biggest accomplishment was raising her three beloved children. She taught them by example how a person with high integrity, devotion, patience, and hard work carries on with the good and the hardships of life while being fashionable and classy. As many have described her, she was ‘the kindest of souls. She also adored and spent most of her later years enjoying her grandchildren, helping raise them when her kids needed support.
She was born in a time when women were not expected to be very independent. In 1952, determined to see the world, she traveled to Philadelphia from Bogota, Colombia. She made this voyage by herself at the young age of 24 and stayed initially for a few weeks. This trip at the time required three stops, flying only in propeller planes. So rare was such a trip that she was featured in the newspaper socials in Bogota!
Her professional career was also ground-breaking, landing an accounting position with the Swiss Bank in New York City. On one occasion, she shook Bobby Kennedy’s hand at the steps of the NYSE and talked about how few Colombians lived in NYC at the time.
Our stunningly beautiful mother and grandmother’s pioneering and adventurous spirit will continue to live on. Always forward-thinking, she will keep challenging us to keep learning and growing.
