Samuel Albert “Sam” Saxon, artist and educator, has died at the age of 86 on Friday, December 9, 2022. Sam was born in Albany, Georgia on April 6, 1936, the son of Samuel Albert Saxon, Jr and Sarah Joe Murray Saxon. He attended Al Read Obituary
Wow, Sam who knew you were so talented. I visited Gainesville many times, especially to visit my bother, George who had George's Barber Shop on 121 north of town. When he lived in Hague, I took him up pass the town of Alachua to visit our ancestors in the Newnansville Cemetery.
I believe that Sam Saxon and I were air traffic controllers at Eglin AFB, Florida between 1957-1959. I thought he was from the Saxon family from the Hernando Co., FL area all these years until I read his obituary and see it was Alachua Co., FL. Sammy was a tough kid and played on our flag football team which played in the championship game only to lose when The winning team brought players from the base football team to play against us. RIP Sammy and hope this gets to your family, your bio was full of life. I wish I could have told you that my ancestors settled in Alachua Co. before it became a Florida County in 1824. Sam was a faithful Knight of Columbus at St. A's and when he was at meetings he lent a confidence to the proceedings and I know impressed the young Knights just by being there for them. My best memories of Sam however are his readings from the ambo at Mass. His voice was dramatic and he knew how to communicate the Word of God to us. If only he had been able and willing to give us a homily too!
So sorry to hear of Sam's passing, Cecile. I was thinking of him just the other day, as I was doing the "art walk" in Melrose - wondering if he was still painting. My prayers are with you and the family. May God pour out his blessings of peace and comfort on all who mourn Sam's passing. He was one of a kind!
I knew Sam previously from his painting days in Melrose paintouts with other invited locals, it was a wonderful time. Then again in the last year thru Cecile at church, where we did volunteer cleanups several times. I always sat at their table during breakfast buffets and enjoyed his wit and wisdom, as I’m sure his family did as well for many more years. They are very fortunate to have known him so long, and we will pray for him.
