Ruth Oliver Scully's Obituary
Ruth Oliver Scully, 92, passed away on December 1, 2025, in Gainesville, Florida. She was born on March 19, 1933, in Charlotte, North Carolina to Norval Alexander and Bess Robertson Oliver.
When Ruth was four years old her family left Charlotte, NC and moved to Jacksonville where she grew up. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. Ruth moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1958 where she attended the University of Florida. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church, and she sang in the choir and bell choir.
Ruth played the piano and always had to have a piano in the house. She was an avid reader and part of the Red Hats Society. She was a Hospice Volunteer and sang with Sweet Notes.
Ruth was preceded by her husband Dick Scully, her parents, and her three brothers, Norval Oliver, Banks Oliver, and Ben Oliver.
She is survived by her children, Dana Shires III, Ben Shires, Melinda Vacey, Sarah Waldron, and Patricia Garate; her grandchildren, Dana Shires IV, Natalie Shires, Stacy Shires, Jessica Bott, Jennifer Vacey, Patrick Shires, Rachel Hole, Brittany Sullivan, Colin Waldron, and Cheyenne Garate; and her great-grandchildren, Asher Villa, Aidenne Villa, Noah Hole, Wynn Hole, Morgan Hole, Elliot Hole, and A.J. Bott.
Celebration of Ruth’s Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at Westside Baptist Church, 10000 W. Newberry Rd Gainesville, FL 32606, with Rev. David Chauncey officiating.
