Ronald Edward "Pete" Squires' Obituary
Ronald Edward “Pete” Squires, 74, lifelong resident of Gainesville, Florida, died Sunday, January 29, 2023 in Astor, Florida.
Pete was born in Gainesville on July 22, 1948 to the late George Edward and R. Lucille Sapp Squires. He graduated from Gainesville High School, and then joined the United States Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam. After returning home, he began working as security guard, eventually retiring as supervisor of security for Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Pete was member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9986, Astor, Florida; the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #41; a former longtime member of the Gainesville Moose Lodge and a member of the Blackwater Yacht Club. He enjoyed woodworking, motorcycles, boating and relaxing with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Eva Jo Studstill and a brother, Ray Moody.
He is survived by a daughter, Sandra “Sandy” (Don) Sundberg; one sister, Nancy Squires (Gordon) Slaughter, a brother, Lynn (Kristen) Moody; a sister-in-law, Theresa “Reeci” Moody; his significant other, Loretta Beardon along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services with military honors will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 11:00 A. M., in the Jonesville Cemetery, with Pastor Walter William “Billy” Slaughter, officiating. All friends and family attending are asked, to keep in Pete’s honor, to dress comfortably. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Astor V. F. W., Post #9986, 55620 Veterans Drive, Astor, FL 32102 or to another charity of your choice that would honor Pete.
