Robert Andrew Whitney, “Bassin Bob” age 71 of Hawthorne passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024 at home surrounded by his family. He was born October 25, 1952 to Andrew and Peggy Hickman Whitney,
Bob was born and raised in Gainesville. He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1970. In 1974 he began his career at the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, starting in traffic, S.W.A.T., K-9, warrant officer and civil warrants. He retired from the Sheriff’s office in 2003. Bob loved hunting, fishing and Nascar.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Connie Pearce Whitney; daughter, Arnette “Nette” Polk and husband; brothers, James Whitney and wife Janet, Roger Whitney and wife, Kathleen; sister, Donna Pederson and husband, Roger; 5 grandchildren, Miranda, Kaci, Kevin, Kayd, Matthew; 2 great grandchildren, Jameson Andrew and Jolynn Whitney and his beloved dog, Sweet Pea.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Cross Creek Baptist Church, 18921 S County Road 325, Hawthorne, with Pastor Dan Blasiole and Pastor Robert Pearce officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery, Hawthorne near Lochloosa. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 10, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Williams-Thomas Downtown, 404 North Main Street.
