Robert Durand Byrd, age 77, recently of Gainesville, Florida, passed into a better life on June 11, 2021, after a battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anne Saunders Byrd, and was a devote Read Obituary
He was such a kind person and really cared about his students. I was one of his many students in the 1990s at Edgewood. Thanks for adding pictures so some us who didn’t know him in his younger years can see more cool pics of him. My condolences to all who knew him more personally.
Mr. Byrd was the only teacher in my life that had a lasting impact on me, and I'm guessing this is true for a lot of Merritt Island kids. He made learning fun, and taught all of us a lot about life. I'll miss running into him around Brevard County, and sharing a huge hug as we used to.
Anne, Kathy and Kevin, it has been a pleasure to know Bob here at The Village at Gainesville. We always enjoyed his jokes and that winning smile. We also lived on Merritt Island before moving to Gainesville. Dan and Ellen Schmidt

Mr. Bryd was my teacher in jr. high at Edgewood. I have such fond memories of him. Always kind, smiling and great sense of humor. May he Rest In Peace. The world lost a great man.
Bob was the nicest man! My husband’s family went to church with Bob and the Byrd family for many years. Whenever I visited the church after Ben and I got engaged, Bob always wanted to know how wedding planning was going and when we were getting married. When we did, he offered to let us spend our honeymoon in his family’s cabin in NC. We spent several nights there on our honeymoon trip!
When we returned, Bob offered us some furniture for our new home. My daughter (now in her 30s) still has a dresser he gave us! I will always remember Bob fondly for his smile and positive disposition, and his generous, helpful character. Go with God, brother! May your new Heavenly body give you back the freedom to run and move that your illness prevented and may you enjoy streets of gold and your reward for “running the race” on earth, well. Love to the Byrd family. We are praying for you! ❤️🙏🏻
