Robert “Bob” Vose Halsey, Jr. age 88 passed away Tuesday, December 10th, 2019 in Gainesville Florida.
Bob was born on July 9, 1931 in Richmond, Virginia to Robert Vose Halsey and Caroline Paull Halsey. Robert attended the University of Virginia and received a certificate of mechanics at Embry Riddle University. Bob served in the U.S. Army from May 1951 to February 1953. He was a Korean War Veteran, serving as an aircraft mechanic in the 25th Infantry Division in Korea. During his service Bob was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, Commendation Ribbon with Medal Pendant.
Bob lived in many areas of Florida including Newberry, Miami and St. Petersburg. He also resided in Charlottesville, NC; Canoga Park, CA; Oakton, VA and Blowing Rock, NC. Bob was a proud member of Destiny Community Church in Newberry, FL and of the Republican Party. Bob was employed from 1955 to 1985 as a Captain for United Airlines. He piloted the following commercial aircrafts: DC6, DC8, Boeing 727, Boeing 737, Boeing 767. In addition to being a line pilot, he served as a trainer and check airman.
In his earlier years Bob loved horseback riding, weightlifting and body building, sailing, motorcycle riding, rafting, tennis and traveling the world. In his later years, Bob loved gardening. In fact, he won the Yard of the Month Award twice in his last residence in Country Way in Newberry, Florida. More than anything else he loved helping other people. He would give the shirt off his back if he saw someone in need. Because of this, he had many, many friendships with people from all walks of life.
Bob was preceded in death by his father Robert Vose Halsey; his mother, Caroline Paull Halsey; his sister, Patricia Halsey Shannon and his sons, Bradford Scott Halsey and Eric Woods Halsey.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Mary A. Halsey; his sons, William Halsey and Joseph Halsey (Amy Halsey); his grandchildren, Ashley Halsey White, Robert Halsey, Brendan Halsey, Dallas Halsey, Taylor Halsey and Brooks Halsey and his great grandchildren Jane White and Charlie White.
Bob was a kind and gentle man, and very generous toward others. To his family he was so much more than a husband, father or grandfather; in so many ways, he was bigger than life itself. If you spent any time around Bob, you know that he asked a lot of questions about you and your life. He was always more interested in others than he was in himself and would give the shirt off his back if he saw someone in need. The thing our family is most thankful for, though, is that he had Jesus in his heart. Bob prayed to invite Christ in on many occasions in his life (you can’t say that prayer too many times, can you?), most recently within the past two weeks with one of his sons. The heartfelt “Amen” at the end of that prayer said it all. Dad, enjoy Heaven. You’re home.
