I would like to share some memories of my younger brother Bruce. I treasure the memories of looking for and collecting snakes and turtles for Ross Allen's Reptile Institute in Silver Springs, Florida in th 1950's with Bruce, Bill, Rihard Cushman, and Robert Allen. Another memory that comes to mind is Bruce's bridle training of the family's annual beef steer and him riding it around the neighborhood on Archer Road. I remember the times when Dad Cake would take us Cake boys to Cedar Key for a day of fishing on the docks. That love of fishing extended through our lives and included forays of deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico with Mac Canaga, my dad, the Cake brothers and nephews. Canoeing on the Buffalo River was another activity we enjoyed. On one occasion, we encountered a flock of black vultures eating breakfast on the sand bar near our camp site. The black vultures were highly annoyed that we had invaded their site and Bruce proceeded to check out their breakfast...some other camper's leftover chicken. Coming home to Gainesville was always fun especially when we got to join Bruce and Madam McCloud for Bruce's signature breakfast of huevos rancheros and mimosas on the porch overlooking Newnan's lake. Those wonderful breakfast memories epitomize the deep love and warm affection I shared with and for my brother Bruce. I miss him.
