Pledger W. "Pete" Kirby's Obituary
Pledger W. “Pete” Kirby, age 97 of Gainesville, Florida passed away Friday, December 22, 2017. He was born October 7, 1920 in La Crosse, Florida to Silvanos S. and Ruby Hammons Kirby.
Mr. Kirby was a lifelong resident of Alachua County and still lived on the farm where he was born. He was a graduate of Alachua High School. He was married to Marie Wood Kirby for 66 years. He proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Navy (Pacific Theater) and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. He retired after a 40 year career from the Department of Transportation from the State of Florida. He was a life-long farmer and very active in his community well into his late 90’s. His name is in the “Lamb’s Book of Life” and he is a member of “The Kingdom of God”. He attended Santa Fe Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 siblings, many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and his son, Cary L. Kirby.
He is survived by wife, Marie Kirby; daughter, Priscilla Kirby; son, Arie Kirby (Andrea); brother, Troy Kirby; grandchildren, Drew and Aaron Kirby; great grandchildren, Arie, Brayden, Emily, Kendal, MaKenzie and many nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, 3612 NW 177 Ave, Gainesville with Pastor Mark Teague officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Santa Fe Baptist Church food ministry.
