Peruvemba Raman Sundaram's Obituary
`Peruvemba Raman Sundaram, lovingly known as "Thatha" to all who knew him, passed away peacefully at the age of 96, surrounded by family in Gainesville, Florida. Born on September 21, 1928, in Peruvemba, India, he lived a life rich in learning, laughter, and love—a life that leaves an indelible legacy for his family and all fortunate enough to cross his path.
With a passion for knowledge and a love for reading and writing, he meticulously made paper covers for every book he owned. A lifelong scholar, he filled notebook after notebook with his notes, insights, and reflections, devoting his life to learning. His unending pursuit of learning was a beacon for his family, inspiring in them a shared curiosity about the world and an appreciation for the written word. Whether delving into the depths of a novel or solving life’s puzzles, he brought a thoughtful precision and joy to all his endeavors.
A fiercely independent spirit, Thatha had a knack for order, organization and resourcefulness. He believed that everything, no matter how small or mundane an object, had a use and purpose—a philosophy that extended to his interactions with others. With a heart full of kindness, he found the good in every person he met, often lacing his observations with the sharp wit and great sense of humor that were his signature.
He was a man of many stories, like the time he convinced his then seven-year-old grandson that his Adam’s apple was actually a perpetually stuck piece of chocolate—a tale that will live on in family lore. His sense of humor was only rivaled by his illustrious, thick hair, the envy of many even into his 90s.
Even breaking into the big “90”s did not stop him from his daily miles-long walks, proof of the vitality and determination that carried him through life. He reveled in the beauty of nature and the rhythm of his steps, a meditative practice that kept his body and spirit strong.
After 18 years apart, he will finally be reunited with his beloved late wife, Laxmi. Survived by his loving son, Sriram; his daughter-in-law, Neeta; his two adoring grandchildren, Aryaman and Aryana; his four sisters, Seetha, Pappal, Rasamma, and Radha; and the cherished family canine companion, Scarlett (whom he fondly mispronounced as "Charlotte"), Thatha left a legacy deeply woven into the fabric of his family’s lives.
Though he just missed his goal of reaching 100, his memory and the impact he has had on others throughout his life will live on well beyond then. His life was a testament to the idea that true immortality lies in the memories we create and the love we leave behind. His wisdom, humor, and remarkable ability to see the extraordinary in the ordinary will live on well beyond a century, cherished by all who were touched by his warmth and light.
Rest in peace, dear Thatha. Your footsteps may no longer grace this earth, but your memory will continue to guide us, reminding us to seek knowledge, cherish laughter, and find beauty in life’s smallest moments.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 12:00 P. M., in the Chapel of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown, 404 North Main Street, Gainesville. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, https://rmhc.org/donate.
