Joe was a friend for almost 40 years. During the racial tensions on campus during the late '70s and early '80s, we rented busses and took 35 black students and 35 white students to a camp in Ocala for intensive, 2 day weekend "seminars". Joe was the facilitator, and taught the students "how to listen and communicate". We did this several times, and Joe freely contributed his time and talent to this. No one was better at getting others to open up and share their feelings than Joe was. Everyone who was at these retreats came to respect and appreciate Joe. Much of the credit for campus racial peace during those volatile years was a result of Joe's quiet, but effective work. He never sought any credit for what he did, and few others on campus ever even knew about this leadership on his part. He knew how to help students deal with anger and frustration, and helped them learn about themselves and others. He was the best...period. I was very lucky to have him as a friend.
