Mrs. Onyx Grubbs Shaffer's Obituary
Onyx Grubbs Shaffer, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at Haven Hospice in Gainesville. She was born in Hilton, Early Co., Georgia.
Onyx married Charles Vernon Shaffer on Aug. 9, 1944, and they made their home in Gainesville.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her son Charles Lewis Shaffer, and daughter Joy D. Sutton, M.D. Her daughter, Mary Onyx Jones, preceded her in death. Her grandchildren are Gregory S. Jones II and Lily Onyx Jones. Of her eight siblings, Onyx is survived by sister, Frances G. Taylor, sister, Sallie G. Calhoun, and brother, Walter Lewis Grubbs.
Onyx attended UF, participated in the University Women’s Club, Gainesville Garden Club, Florida Museum of Natural History, UF Alumni Assoc., Huguenot Society, DAR, and Engineering Women’s Club.
Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 1:00 pm in the chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main Street, with Reverend Lynwood Walters officiating.
The family is requesting no flowers. Memorial donations to Haven Hospice, DAR, or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
