Occelus Alfred's Obituary
Occelus Alfred was born on April 1, 1933, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to the late Elvicius Alfred and Marie R. Victorin. He was a longtime resident of Gainesville, Florida, and passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at his home.
Mr. Alfred worked abroad as a mason and built homes and structures until his late son was diagnosed with leukemia. He and his family immigrated to Gainesville in 1981 so that his son could receive treatment at Shands Hospital.
Occelus began working with the Alachua County School Board and worked there until he retired in 2002 to take care of his late wife, Mrs. Minerva Alfred, who preceded him in death in 2021. Mr. Alfred had a vivacious personality and was a highly active member of the community. He was a longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the St. Vincent De Paul Society.
Nicknamed the “The Candyman,” Occelus Alfred will forever be remembered as a resolute husband, loving father, and beloved grandfather.
He is survived by one daughter, Marie N. Alfred, and son-in-law, Jackson Beauregard; a granddaughter, Marie C. Alfred; grandson, Daniel Alfred-Beauregard; great grandchild, George Alfred; three sisters-in-law, Winie Beaudouin, Ginette Bernard and Jacqueline Larsen; two brothers-in-law, Leonel Bernard, and Dr. Jean Beaudouin.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 10:00 A. M., at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 500 NE 16th Avenue, Gainesville, with Fr. Lawrence Peck, celebrant. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Gainesville. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:00 at Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown, 404 North Main Street, Gainesville.
