Nita Olene Hughes' Obituary
Mrs. Nita Olene Hughes, 80, longtime resident of Hawthorne, Florida, died Wednesday, February 10, 2016 in the Shands Hospital, Gainesville, following a long illness.
Mrs. Hughes was born on August 19, 1935 in Moss Bluff, Florida to the late Charles Samuel and Annie Graham Davis. She grew up in the Ocala area, her first job being at the Silver Springs Shirt Factory, where she learned to love sewing and being a seamstress. She made all of her families clothes for events and special occasions. Mrs. Hughes went to work for Wal-Mart as a cashier and greeter, and later began a long career working as a parking supervisor for the Gainesville Regional Airport, until her health forced her retirement. . Besides sewing, she had many hobbies that kept her active, an avid reader, Gator sports, movies and traveling, especially to the beach. Mrs. Hughes was a longtime member of the Orange Heights Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Mr. Billy Bright Hughes in 1987.
Survivors include; three daughters, Janet (Brett) McMillan, Vicki (Ivan) Thompson and Susan Thompson, all of Hawthorne; one son, Owen (Peggy) Johnson of Gainesville; one sister, Tommie-Lou Perkins of Ocklawaha. Nine grandchildren, two step-granddaughters, ten great grandchildren and one step great granddaughter also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 15, 2016 at 11:00 A. M., in the Chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME HAWTHORNE, 301 S at Lake Avenue, with Rev. Aaron Morgan officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior, beginning at 10:00 A. M. Interment will follow in Saluda Cemetery, Orange Heights.
