Nelda Herndon Smith's Obituary
Nelda Herndon Smith, 94, of Gainesville, Florida, died Sunday, January 6, 2019, in the E. T. York Hospice Care Center.
Mrs. Smith was born March 18, 1924 in Boydton, Virginia to parents Lucy and Percy Herndon, also from Virginia. The family moved to North Carolina from Virginia in 1934. Nelda graduated from Hardbarger’s Business college in Raleigh, NC. She worked as a secretary for the N. C. State Depart. Of Revenue in the Franchise and Intangible Tax Department. She worked at First Citizens Bank in Smithfield, NC. Nelda, with her husband and son moved to Gainesville, FL in 1960. In Gainesville, she worked at Sperry Rand and retired from Shands Teaching Hospital, as a manager in patient accounting. She was a member of the Northwest Baptist Church and Grace Sunday School Class. She was a member of the University of Florida Ladies Golf Assoc. for many years. Nelda loved her country and was a member of the Republican National Party and also a member of the Tea Party Patriot Party.
Nelda is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, C. S. Smith, Jr., her sister, Kathryn Sauls, of Raleigh, NC; a brother, Lynwood M. Herndon, of Raleigh, NC.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Jackie Smith and grandchildren, Kyle and Kaylee Smith, all of Gainesville, FL She has many cousins, nieces and nephews living in NC and Virginia.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 2:00 P. M., in the Northwest Baptist Church, with Rev. Trey Meek, church pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Florida Baptist Children’s Home, Post Office Box 8190, Lakeland, FL 33802.
