Nancy Oehmig Smiley's Obituary
The world became a dimmer place on March 23, 2024, when the bright light that was Nancy Carolyn Oehmig Smiley left this earthly realm.
Nancy, or “Nanny” to her family, was a force of nature, with a deep laugh and a hearty sense of humor. She loved babies, nature, animals, hats, jewelry and anything in the color purple. She was devoted to her extensive family and network of friends.
Nancy, 63, graduated from Buchholz High School in 1978. She worked at the Alachua County Tag Office. She later graduated as a radiology technician from Santa Fe Community College.
Nancy particularly enjoyed lounging on a float behind her husband’s boat as they traversed such naturally wild and beautiful places as the Santa Fe River and the salt flats near Steinhatchee.
She was a southern lady who enjoyed preparing a lovely place setting and helping her mother host elegant holiday dinners. She was known for her own “mean” pot of chili.
Over many years of caring for a wide variety of critters, she most recently was the “mom” to her beloved canines Abigail and Kirby, and Becky the potbelly pig.
Nancy truly cherished her human family and would do anything for them. She was famous for the annual Easter egg hunts that included hand-dyed eggs as well as plastic eggs that were filled with candy and money.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Richard Smiley, son Noah Smiley, granddaughters Jillian and Lucille Smiley, brother Ed Oehmig and wife Leah, niece Elena Oehmig Saurez, nephew Wesley Oehmig Jr. and niece Sarah Harper Griffis, as well as numerous other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Ed and Carolyn Oehmig, and brothers Jimmy and Wesley Oehmig.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 1, 2024, at 10:00 am at Queen of Peace Catholic Church 10900 S.W. 24 Ave. Gainesville Fl. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 9:00 am. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery 5517 S.W Highway 358 Steinhatchee, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org
