Nancy Jean Grissett Douglas' Obituary
Douglas, Nancy Jean Grissett died on January 18, 2023. She was born in Clearwater, FL on
August 9, 1931 to Wallace Edward and Grace Clark Grissett. She grew up in Jacksonville, FL
and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1949. She attended Stetson University and the
University of Florida where she met Edward Dewayne Douglas. They married on February 7,
1953 and made their home in Gainesville, FL. Nancy was the office manager for Gainesville Eye
Physicians West for 29 years, retiring in January 2000. She was a communicant at St. .Joseph’s
Episcopal Church since 1989. During that time, she served as lay Eucharistic minister, lector,
treasurer, UTO Coordinator, Cursillo contact person, chairman of the search committee and
delegate to the diosesan convention. She also served at the diocesan level as Santa Fe Region
representative to the Episcopal Church Women, Santa Fe Region contact person and Santa Fe
Region representative to the Cursillo Council. She was a volunteer (Pink Lady) at Shands at the
University of Florida for many years working in the surgical waiting room. She loved family
get-togethers, reading and over the years, her many beloved cats.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband of 47 years, Edward D. Douglas, daughter
Patricia Douglas Bennett, brother Wallace Edward Grissett, Jr. sisters Carolyn G. May and
Margaret G. Jones, grandson Jared Dewayne Duff, nephew David Lindley Jones and niece Kathy
Diane May. Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Thomas Edward Douglas, Nancy
Susan Douglas, John David Douglas (Joan) and Julie Elizabeth Douglas McGriff (Mark). Also
by her grandchildren, Jake Bradly Bennett (Kelsey), Jesse Lee Bennett, Jace Matthew Fowler,
Sean Michael Thomas Douglas, Olivia Malone Douglas, Samantha Rose Douglas, Taylor Colson
McGriff, Riley Edward McGriff, Logan Lindley McGriff, great-grandson Steven Michael Duff,
great-granddaughters Scarlett Jo Bennett, Maeve Rosalind Bennett, Lillian Fowler and by several
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church 16921 West Newberry Road,
Newberry, FL on February 10, 2023 at 11:00am. Interment of ashes will follow in the cremains
garden and privately at Forest Meadows Central.
