Maurice Vincent Giunta's Obituary
The Honorable Maurice Vincent Giunta, age 82, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, in Gainesville, Florida.
Maurice was born on August 4, 1942, in Passaic, New Jersey, to James Vincent and Mary Gauthier Giunta. A dedicated public servant and committed community member, Maurice devoted more than 50 years to the Florida Bar. Following his graduation from the University of Florida’s Holland Law Center in 1974, Maurice served as an Assistant State Attorney for 13 years. Maurice was elected to the position of Alachua County Judge in 1987 and was appointed in 1993 by Gov. Lawton Chiles to the position of Circuit Court Judge for the 8th Judicial Circuit. Judge Giunta served on numerous BAR Associations, County and Circuit Court Committees.
His generosity and leadership were felt widely through his involvement in numerous organizations, including the Ronald McDonald House (serving as President for 12 years from 1981-1993), Florida Museum of Natural History, Classic 89 (WUFT-FM), Gainesville Dog Fanciers’ Association, Leadership Gainesville, The Elks Club and the Gainesville Rotary Club.
An avid outdoorsman, Maurice found great joy in fishing, boating, hunting and scuba diving, passions that reflected his adventurous spirit and deep appreciation for nature.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John Giunta.
Maurice is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Nancy Morris Giunta; his sons, Paul Duff and wife Diana Duff, of Jacksonville, Florida, and Brian Giunta and wife Deana Giunta, of Gainesville, Florida; his sister, Maureen Young of Brick, New Jersey; and his cherished grandchildren: Reece, Julia, Nick, Ella, Lily, Jay, and Maddie; his sister-in-law Dana Taramina and husband is Andrzej Taramina. Maurice is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and their children.
The family will receive friends at 2:00 PM followed by a service to celebrate the life of the Honorable Maurice Giunta beginning at 2:30 PM on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Gainesville Woman’s Club, 2809 W University Ave, Gainesville, FL 32607.
