Mary Julia "Mae" Gorski's Obituary
Mary Julia “Mae” Gorski, lovingly known as Mom, Nanee, Memaw and Grandma, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, in Gainesville, Florida, at the age of 104. The matriarch of her family, she leaves behind a legacy defined by love, devotion, and a life that spanned more than a century of change with grace warmth and an unshakable commitment to her family.
Born on October 15, 1921, in Newark, New Jersey, Mary “Mae” lived through extraordinary times, meeting each chapter with grace, warmth, and quiet strength. In her early years, she worked alongside her family in their restaurant, where her strong work ethic and generous spirit were evident to all who knew her.
Mae married the love of her life, William Gorski, where they shared a long and loving marriage. Together they built a home rooted in love, tradition, and unwavering support. As a mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, she stood at the center of her family, her love reaching across generations. As her family continued to grow, she never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or milestone, often traveling great distances to be present for the people she loved. Her warmth and laughter enriched every gathering.
A gifted and patient artist, she handcrafted exquisite Fabergé-style eggs for more than forty Christmas seasons, gifting each handmade treasure to family members and treasured friends as a lasting symbol of her affection and creativity. She was also cherished for her traditional Polish cooking of pierogies and her beloved cheesecake, which became a treasured part of family celebrations.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Marlene Haakonson, Patricia Diebold, son in law Pat Haakonson, and by numerous grandchildren (7), great-grandchildren (18) and great-great-grandchildren (9) who continue to carry her legacy forward. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gorski, her daughter, Virginia “Gigi” St. Claire, son in law, Foster Diebold, her brother and four sisters.
Mae Gorski's life was a testament to love, family and devotion to her Catholic Faith.
A service to celebrate the life of Mae Gorski will be held Friday, March 13, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 5740 S Pine Ave., Ocala, FL 34480. Interment will follow.
