Marjorie Lawing Tomlin's Obituary
Marjorie Lawing Tomlin, born December 16, 1926 in Jacksonville, Florida, died August 3, 2015, at The Village in Gainesville, Florida.
Marj grew up in Thomasville, Georgia, where she was high school valedictorian, and graduated from Auburn University in 1948 with a BS in Chemistry. She married Edwin Ladeau Tomlin on June 16, 1948.
Marj lived on four continents and traveled extensively. In addition to being a wonderful cook, a Cub Scout den mother, a seamstress, a piano player, a 1960's neighborhood mom, a reliable volunteer for charitable causes, and a steady churchgoer, Marj worked for doctors and financial services companies once her children were raised. Her favorite place to live was Sausalito, California, where she was president of the local MENSA chapter. Her favorite car was a turquoise Dodge Dart Swinger. Her kind heart, black bottom pie, memorable orange rice, obscure sense of humor and quirky responses will be missed. Although Marj ventured far from her South Georgia childhood home, she always retained its values and graces.
She is survived by her four loving children: Cynthia Jeanne Riggs (New Orleans), Edwin Ladeau Tomlin, Teresa Ann Tomlin and David Laurence Tomlin (all of Gainesville); five grandchildren: Zachary Lynn Crockett (San Francisco), Heidi Marie Crockett (St. Petersburg), Victoria Suzanne Riggs (New Orleans), Tudorel Tomlin and Ilie Tomlin (Gainesville); and one great-grandchild on the way!
A Memorial Eucharist Service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Gainesville, 100 NE 1st St, on Saturday, August 8, at 11:00 AM. All are invited to a reception at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Holy Trinity Episcopal Foundation, 305 NE 1st St, Gainesville, FL 32601.
