Laura Smith York, 69, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 23, 2024. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 35 years Bill York. Laura was born on August 19, 1954, to the late Harvey and Virginia Smith, of Lakeland, Florida. Laura had two siblings Larry Douglas Smith (Marilyn) of Florence, Kentucky, and Linda Diane Thomas (Bill) of Lakeland, Florida. She is survived by her sister-in-law Susan (David) Sofferin of Thomasville, Georgia and her brother-in-law Michael (Donna) York of Chattahoochee, Florida. Laura and Bill had one child, the light of their lives, Sarah Elisabeth. Sarah blessed them with 2 grandchildren Lillian York and Paxton Noel. Her grandchildren were a blessing to her life as she was to theirs. She also left behind a host of nieces and nephews.
Laura had an extensive and rewarding career in the field of nursing, Her accomplishments include teaching at the University of Kentucky and earning a specialization in cardiac intensive care. Her love of nursing was shared with the patients and her colleagues at the Malcom Randall VA Hospital for many years, where she concluded her nursing career by retiring.
Laura's life extended far beyond her nursing career, she volunteered at the Gainesville Food Pantry as well as served others in many ways through her church, Saint Joseph Episcopal Church, where she was a longtime and faithful member. It also must be added that Laura loved all animals, especially cats.
A memorial service honoring Laura will be held on Monday, April 1st, at 2:00 PM, at Saint Joseph Episcopal Church, 16921 West Newberry Road, Newberry Florida . A graveside service will be held the following day at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 6412 S. Highway 90 East, Chattahoochee, Florida where Laura will be laid to rest beside her husband, Bill.
