Lana Banister Halbrook's Obituary
Lana Banister Halbrook, 78, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away peacefully at her home on June 2, 2025.
Born on July 1, 1946, to Ceree and Ruth Cooksey Banister, Lana was a lifelong resident of Gainesville. She graduated from Gainesville High School in 1964 and remained close with many of her classmates throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth; father, Ceree; brother, Joe; son, Doug; and many dear cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends she considered family. She is survived by her niece, Amanda Rone (Robert); grandson, Robbie Keppel (Lauren); granddaughters, Peyson and Maren Rone; and great-granddaughter, Sadie Grace Keppel.
Lana was beloved by everyone who knew her. She was kind, thoughtful, intelligent, and compassionate, with a rare gift for truly seeing people for who they were. She was lively and fun, and an exceptionally good dancer. She was known for winning dance contests at Teen Time in her youth and was even selected to appear on American Bandstand. She loved reminiscing about her childhood in the Duckpond and the days of “Old Gainesville,” when she stayed out until the streetlights came on, shopped for beautiful clothes at Ruddy’s Department Store, went to movies at the Florida Theatre and the Gainesville Drive-In, and shared Cokes with friends at Wise’s Drug Store.
Lana found joy in being outdoors, spending time in her yard, and tending to her flowers. She had a deep love for animals and never hesitated to help any creature in need. She lived a life of quiet selflessness, always putting others before herself without seeking recognition. She was the matriarch of her family and fully embodied the spirit of a caregiver. Lana was always there for the milestone moments. She attended countless weddings, graduations, school plays, sporting events, and trick-or-treated every year with her granddaughters. She was the definition of present and supportive.
Though small in stature, Lana had a heart that was immeasurable. She was an exceptionally beautiful person, both inside and out. The world is better for her having been in it, and she will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.
A gathering to honor Lana’s life will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Williams-Thomas Westarea 823 N.W. 143rd Street Newberry, Fl.
