Joseph E. Bason Sr.'s Obituary
Joseph E. Bason, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 of congestive heart failure. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Mary Bason of Freehold, NJ.
He was also predeceased by his brothers, Richard and John; sister, Dorothy Schultz.
He served four years in the United States Navy. In 1956 he married Julia Elizabeth “Betty” Strickland. He started as officer #28 on the Gainesville Police Department. He worked his way through to the position of Assistant Chief. During this time, he earned a dual BS in criminal justice and police administration.
After retirement in 1984 he moved to Suwannee, FL and became a fishing guide. He retired from guiding in 2014. Joe was liked and respected by his friends and coworkers. He was known for his cooking, and even catered big events. He was an active member of Suwannee Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and was a church greeter.
He his survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty; son, Joe, Jr. (Christi); grandson, Kyle (Kaitlyn) and granddaughter, Hailey Bason.
Graveside funeral services with both police and military honors will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 10:00 A. M., at Memorial Park East, 3700 SE Hawthorne Road, Gainesville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Florida Police Benevolent Association Heart Fund, 300 East Brevard Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301.
