John David Stobbie's Obituary
John David Stobbie, Jr. was born on June 3, 1957 in Stamford, CT to Jack and Jean Stobbie. He passed away unexpectedly on April 26, 2016. John is survived by his wife Kim and his three children, Lauren, John, and Brittney. He is predeceased by his mother. He is also survived by his father Jack Stobbie, his sisters Kathleen Cummings of Seattle, WA and Rachel Tyrrell (Lynn) of Stamford, CT and brothers Brian Stobbie (Mercedes) of Darien, CT and Tim Stobbie of Tampa, FL.
John was an accomplished athlete enjoying many sports including high school football and baseball, however his true athletic gift was diving. Growing up, he dove for Roxbury Swim & Tennis club where his records stood for several decades. John dove on the University of Florida’s 1980 and 1981 SEC championship team and went on to the NCAA Championship. John graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Physical Education. John’s years in Gainesville, Florida made him into an avid Gator fan who loved any and all things ’Orange and Blue.’ He would be delighted to end this with a shout out of “Go Gators.”
John was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, son, and coach. As a PE teacher, John touched the lives of many children. He became known simply as ‘Coach’ and was loved and respected by those who knew him. John will be remembered for his love of God, family, and friends, great sense of humor, along with his barbeque and love for Led Zeppelin.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Trinity United Methodist Church Sanctuary, 4000 NW 53rd Ave, Gainesville, FL 32653, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Tim Tebow Foundation in John Stobbie’s honor.
